JOB TITLE: Unix / Windows System Administrator

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Assignment:
The Principal System Administrator, will contribute to a team responsible for all functions associated with the daily operations of the IT infrastructure including the configuration, monitoring, and daily operational support of Linux, UNIX and Windows systems. The candidate will work closely with IT and research groups to deliver high-quality support services that provide substantial value to the business.
This position will rotate through a 24x7 on-call assignment, and occasional off-hour support is necessary. A certain degree of flexibility of schedule is required as some work must be done outside of major production hours during pre-scheduled maintenance windows. This position reports to the Server Team Lead in the Information Services Department.
Special Talents: Service Operations
1. Day-to-day server hardware and software support and monitoring of the Linux, unix and Windows environments including operating system software, security compliance, maintenance, hardware break/fix, and performance troubleshooting.
2. Participate in Linux & Windows operating system builds, upgrades, patches and optimization in both physical and virtual environments.
3. Identify and implement practices to increase server reliability and performance.
4. Perform root cause analysis and provide recommendations to improve efficiencies and resolve problems within linux and Windows systems.
System and Service Documentation
1.) Develop, publish, and maintain system documentation (e.g. Requirements, Design/Build, Testing, and SOP) according to department standards.
2.) Create and maintain reporting for supported services. Reporting benefits usage, availability and compliance with procedures.
3.) Develop and deliver training for peers and/or end-users on service features, enhancements or new applications to increase service adoption and usage.
Required:
- Experience with Windows Server, Windows Active Directory/LDAP, SQL Server, and SCOM
- Experience in the installation, upgrade, configuration, monitoring, troubleshooting, and security of Windows 2003, 2008, 2008 R2 servers including the Enterprise versions
- Experience with or working knowledge of Virtualization technologies (VMware, Hyper-V, etc)
- Experience supporting Microsoft File Services and DFS. Including supporting and resolving file ACL problems
- Experience supporting UNIX systems. Solaris 9 or 10, Solaris Zones and Red Hat Linux 5 experience
- Provide day-to-day support for server hardware, software, and monitoring of the Windows, Linux and Solaris/UNIX environment, which includes Operating System software, volume management, software/systems integration, security compliance, systems maintenance, hardware break/fix, and performance troubleshooting
- Ability to install/deploy and configure Red Hat Linux and Windows systems
- Working knowledge of core networking applications/protocols: DNS, NTP, DHCP, TCP/IP, SSH, T/FTP, HTTP/S
- Work closely with key vendors and escalate problems as necessary to meet support level agreements
- Experience maintaining documentation of processes, procedures, troubleshooting guides and change management logs
Preferred:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or other related scientific or technical discipline
- Ability to program in an administrative language (e.g. Perl, Python, Shell scripts, VB, Powershell) to automate basic processes
- ITIL v3 Foundations Certification
- Red Hat Linux (or other UNIX certifications) or Windows Server Administration Certification
Required:
- 3+ years of technical IT experience supporting Unix and Windows systems
- Demonstrated experience supporting projects with increasing levels of responsibility.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
