Position: Applications & Software Engineer
Location: Camp Springs, MD
Salary: $65-75K
 
  • Conducts investigations and tests of complex scientific software systems to enhance performance or to investigate and resolve matters of significance.
  • Recommends corrections in complex scientific applications and analysis to enhance performance or to port application to a new system/hardware architecture.
  • Increases technical scientific expertise by introducing new technologies and by acting as a mentor to others.
  • Provides documentation of new or existing scientific applications.
  • Provides high level troubleshooting support to NOAA community.  Develops balanced solutions to problems that impact the design success of product development efforts and analyzes software programs to ensure compatibility with hardware systems.
  • Customizes software based upon research and customer needs as appropriate.
  • Coordinates and facilitates communications with other groups/organizations and/or vendors to investigate and resolve software matters of significance and to ensure proper functioning of systems.
  • Maintains communication with management and customers regarding status of software modifications, developments, and problems.
  • Provides the customer base with multi-level user support.

The following are required qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • Minimum 6 years experience in software engineering or operating systems programming
  • Experience working with software design principles
  • Strong analytical and creative problem solving skills to resolve highly complex software design, performance, and/or porting issues
  • Good interpersonal skills to interact with customers and other team members
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Experience with FORTRAN programming language as well as MPI and OpenMP
  • Patience, persistence, and the ability to work on exacting analytical work within tight deadlines.
  • They are looking for weather model experience
